After Months of Scandals, Scott Pruitt Resigns EPA Post

Questions hang over the future of Scott Pruitt the head of the Environmental Protection Agency accused of excessive spending and ethical issues

One longtime Pruitt ally Sen. President Donald Trump tweeted on July 5 that he had accepted Pruitt's resignation.

The list of accusations levelled against the 50-year-old head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has grown nearly too long to itemise in a single article. It was co-owned by the wife of a veteran fossil fuels lobbyist whose firm had sought regulatory rollbacks from EPA.

EPA's senior ethics official, Kevin Minoli, recently reviewed the lease - months after he had vacated the apartment - and deemed that the arrangement did not violate agency rules.

The president expressed confidence he would go on to do "great things". "Shame", Democratic U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly said.

That earlier tweet came in response to another Washington Post report that detailed Pruitt's attempt to find a job for his wife through donors. "Next in line to run the EPA is a coal lobbyist".

Pruitt has been under fire in recent months over a series of controversies, drawing scorn from both Republicans and Democrats, including some GOP figures who have at times had Trump's ear.

It was an emotional process that took 30 minutes and saw family members and friends cry quietly when their loved ones were named. The hearing will also be an opportunity for family of the victims, which ranged in age from 17 to 61, to address the men.

"You are unfit to hold public office and undeserving of the public trust", Rep.

The criticism against EPA administrator Scott Pruitt is piling up. He was also criticized for spending exorbitant amounts of money on personal security and for regularly taking first-class flights.

During his one-year tenure, Pruitt crisscrossed the country at taxpayer expense to speak with industry groups and hobnob with GOP donors, but he showed little interest in listening to advocates he derided as "the environmental left". During a March 29 speech in OH to tout his infrastructure initiative, the president praised the agency for moving to speed up environmental reviews of large projects. Information requests to the agency spiked to as many as 60 a day last year, "many so broadly worded that it will take years to answer", reported the Washington Examiner. "There is no appropriate basis for retaining a cabinet secretary who has behaved like Pruitt".

As the former Attorney General of Oklahoma, Pruitt worked hard to burnish his anti-gay creds, opposing marriage equality and the rights of transgender students. Congress ended up restoring most of the cuts.

"Scott Pruitt's reign of venality is finally over". "It was a secret. and they would decide what to nix from the public calendar". Those groups applauded his departure. "He loves animals, he loves clean air, he loves clean water". Like Pruitt, Wheeler thinks the current evidence on climate change is inconclusive and has lobbied against regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.

But there were subtler changes as well that struck at the core of the EPA's mission as defined by previous administrations.
