Michael Jackson's father, Joe, is dead

Joe Jackson, patriarch of The Jacksons, has died

BREAKING: Michael Jackson’s dad dies at 89

A rep for Michael's estate tells us, "We are deeply saddened by Mr. Jackson's passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Katherine Jackson and the family".

Over the years, Jackson had a rocky relationship with his wife, Katherine, with whom he had 10 children, according to CNN. Joe was a strong man who acknowledged his own imperfections and heroically delivered his sons and daughters from the steel mills of Gary, Indiana, to worldwide pop superstardom.

That changed when the Jackson kids started to grow up and develop an interest in music.

Joe's death comes two days after the death anniversary of Michael Jackson, who died on June 25, 2009.

Joe Jackson, patriarch and taskmaster of the Jackson family, has died. More recently, Joe had been hospitalized amid a battle with pancreatic cancer and was "not doing well" in the past month or so, an insider told People. In the 2003 ITV documentary Living With Michael Jackson, the singer told interviewer Martin Bashir that his father would oversee the Jackson 5's intense rehearsals "with a belt in his hand" and "tear you up, really get you" if one of the brothers missed a step.

But he was also a highly controversial figure. His tweet appeared to reference long-standing media reports of Joe Jackson's alleged history of abuse in regards to Michael and some of his other children.

Jackson was honored with a Brenden Celebrity Star on October 27, 2009, at the Las Vegas premiere of the Michael Jackson documentary, "This is It".

Joe Jackson publicly attempted to defuse the accusations of harsh behavior, often maladroitly. "You beat someone with a stick". Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon have denied that their father was abusive.

He received The Rhythm & Blues Humanitarian Award from the R&B Music Hall of Fame four years later.

That same day, at the Radio Disney Awards held in Los Angeles, California, his daughter Janet mentioned her father in her acceptance speech for the inaugural Impact Award, as The Hollywood Reporter noted.

But Jackson recovered from both illnesses, showing that despite his years, he was still tough. He was no stranger to big families as he was the youngest of five children.

According to the outlet, his wife Katherine and some of his 11 children and grandchildren flew to Las Vegas to be by his side.
