Shinnecock Hills shocker as golf's biggest stars crumble

That's how ugly it was here, as the U.S. Open steadily descended into carnage as the day progressed.

It was the lowest round posted at a US Open at Shinnecock by two strokes, and sits nicely alongside the course record 63 he shot a year ago at Carnoustie - the site of The Open next month.

Davis promised to slow down the course for Sunday's final round. Rickie Fowler responded with the low round of the U.S. Open.

Tied 16th at +8, Zach Johnson is not at all pleased with the Shinnecock Hills course that he believes has escaped the control of the USGA officials. Only the U.S. Open has struggled to present a fair championship and decently regulated course.

Only three players shot under par - co-leaders Daniel Berger and Tony Finau with 66s, and Kiradech Aphibarnrat with a 68.

Phil Mickelson shot 81 and incurred a two-shot penalty for an extraordinary rules breach, leaving himself exposed to a disqualification on his 48 birthday.

The only players other than Koepka to win this national championship in consecutive years are Willie Anderson (thee straight, 1903-05), John McDermott (1911-12), Bobby Jones (1929-30), Ralph Gudahl (1937-38), Ben Hogan (1950-51) and Curtis Strange (1988-89).

"I'd say it's a little bit over the line", Henrik Stenson said after shooting a 74 despite being "pretty happy with the way I played today". Koepka and Johnson, close friends, will play in the penultimate group.

"There's nobody more confident", he told reporters.

"I won this thing past year". I don't think they're interested in listening to my remarks or anyone else's remarks because then wewould have seen maybe slightly different pin positions and setup over the years. "So I felt like it was tough to get a good beat on the speed today", he said.

Meanwhile, Mickelson created a firestorm of controversy when he intentionally hit his ball while it was rolling on the 13 green to keep it from rolling down a slope into a more hard location.

A two-putt birdie at the fifth from Koepka was cancelled out with a blemish at the next, which briefly moved Reed joint top of the leaderboard after the Masters champion holed from 12 feet at the seventh.

With the two-stroke penalty Mickelson took a sextuple bogey 10. This is not meant that way.

"I didn't feel like going back and forth", he said. "No question it was going to go down into the same spot behind the bunker".

Playing alongside Andrew "Beef" Johnston Saturday, Mickelson and his playing partner chuckled about the incident walking to the 14 tee.

"I've never seen golf course change that quickly", Rose said.

"You don't get mulligans in business at this level", tweeted British golfer Ian Poulter Saturday night.
