Mike Pompeo draws firm line on North Korea as summit hangs in balance

Trump-Kim summit: US president will leave early as talks 'moving rapidly'

On Monday evening, Kim's first stop was a waterfront park with futuristic installations, Gardens by the Bay, which boasts the largest glass greenhouse and tallest indoor waterfall in the world.

Some of the crowds of tourists and locals taking photographs of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as he visit the Marina Bay Sands during a city tour. He left early, and as he flew to Singapore, he tweeted that he was yanking the US out of the traditional group statement.

Key gaps remain over what denuclearisation would entail for two countries that have been enemies since the 1950-1953 Korean War, and the officials were trying to push the agenda forward before the leaders meet on Tuesday.

The pledge on denuclearization did not include the US demands for a "complete, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement" of North Korea's nuclear weapons programs, she pointed out. The national security adviser's previous remark that disarmament should follow the "Libya model" embraced by Moammar Qaddafi - who after giving up his nuclear weapons was later overthrown and killed in a US-backed uprising - prompted an angry reply from Pyongyang.

North Korea must take "concrete" steps towards denuclearisation before benefiting from any relaxation of global sanctions, Downing Street has said.

"If diplomacy doesn't move in the right direction, sanctions will increase", Pompeo said.

Those points were echoed in Monday's media coverage, which stressed that the talks with Trump would be focused on forging a relationship that is more in tune with what it called changing times - most likely meaning the North's new status as a nuclear weapons state - its desire for a mechanism to ensure a lasting a durable peace on the Korean Peninsula and, finally, denuclearization.

The White House later said discussions with North Korea had moved "more quickly than expected" and Trump would leave Singapore on Tuesday night, after the summit.

Mr. Trump has described the summit as a "one-time shot" at peace and told reporters during the G7 summit in Canada that he would "know within a minute" if the summit would be successful. Others complained about the traffic jams in downtown Singapore.

Rodong Sinmun, the North Korean government newspaper, published photos of Kim's departure ceremony on its front page, according to the South Korean outlets Chosun Ilbo and Yonhap News Agency. Each met separately with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The director has also confirmed Kristen Wiig ( Bridesmaids ) will be playing Wonder Woman's nemesis Cheetah in the sequel. Plot details for the Wonder Woman sequel are now being kept under wraps.

As Trump and Lee sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, Trump sounded optimistic, telling Lee, "we've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

Mr Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimise expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary. Heavy security and armed police were in place at summit-related venues across the city-state.

In April, freaky footage emerged of 12 smartly dressed bodyguards running alongside Kim's limousine as he left a meeting with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in. Laboriously negotiated past nuclear deals, considered breakthroughs at the time, broke down on North Korea's extreme sensitivity to allowing in outsiders to look at whether they're dismantling their nuclear facilities, many of which are thought to be hidden.

Reuters could not confirm if leader Kim was staying in the Presidential Suite.

Trump's early exit will be his second from a summit in just a few days. "The process could be doomed before it begins". "We can go fast, we can go slowly", Trump said.

The pair are due to meet one-on-one with translators in a session that could last up to two hours before they open the meeting to their respective advisers.

The summit's venue is the Capella hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with luxury hotels, a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America", Mr Kim told Mr Lee through an interpreter when they met Sunday.

Some observers insist that it's the beginning of the complete denuclearization of North Korea.

Asked about Kim's sincerity, Trump said no one can be certain of anything, but "we're going to be certain soon" about Kim's intentions pursuant to ongoing negotiations.
