Raccoons are common in the USA, but are usually found in alleys or riffling through rubbish bins - leading to the common animal nickname "trash panda".

The furry critter's ascent up the UBS Tower, as it clung only to the building's rough exterior more than 20 stories above the ground, started to stress people out on Twitter.

Several downtown Twitter users snapped photos Monday of the raccoon stranded on a second-story ledge by the Seventh Street Skyway near Cedar Street.

Nearby Minnesota Public Radio, which broke the story and closely followed the raccoon's climb from its headquarters less than a block away, branded the animal #mprraccoon.

It captivated onlookers and generated huge interest on social media after it started scaling an office building.

A daredevil raccoon has been safely rescued after leaving the internet on tenterhooks by scaling a 23-floor building in St Paul, Minnesota.

A raccoon stretches itself on the 23rd floor of a tower in Minnesota, US. It made it to the top of the UBS center early Wednesday and was picked up by Wildlife Management Services and is on its way to being released in a safer, skyscraper-less area.

"Any other measures we think would endanger him".

Due to the building's sealed windows, rescue efforts have been futile - animal-control authorities are hoping it will reach the roof where it will be trapped.

It wasn't until about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday the raccoon had successfully reached the top of the building. At that point, the lure of cat food apparently enticed it into the trap.

The account also tweeted: "Oh great ..."

Social media documented the raccoon's climb, as well as local media and crowds of onlookers. People were so invested in the journey of MPR Raccoon that many posted that they would not be able to go on if the animal were to drop to her untimely death.
