Mexico hosted the 1986 World Cup, while the U.S. was awarded the tournament in 1994 but Canada, who have appeared just once at the tournament, have never hosted.
But compared to North America, Morocco's bid existed largely on paper - many stadiums and roads would have had to have been built and critics questioned how it would have coped with the 2026 tournament, which will be expanded to 48 teams.
"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, the president of US Soccer told the delegates from more than 200 member nations following the vote.
"Football today is the only victor".
The previous World Cup, held four years ago in Brazil, generated $4.8 billion for Federation Internationale de Football Association.
The plan is that Canada and Mexico would each host 10 matches, while 60 matches would be played in the United States.
Canada failed in its lone previous bid - to host the 1986 tournament after Colombia pulled out as host.
Atlético agree deal to sign Thomas Lemar from Monaco
Griezmann insists he is made a decision on his club future but has refused to reveal if he will remain with Atletico next season. Griezmann is expected to announce his future before his nation's World Cup campaign begins against Australia on Saturday.
Five times they have bid, and five times they have been overlooked - Morocco are perhaps destined to never host a World Cup. "[Such an event is] impossible without a huge number of specialists and enthusiasts of the entire world football family", the President said.
USA, Canada and Mexico had been considered favourites throughout the bidding process, despite some suggesting the controversial politics of American president Donald Trump could help Morocco.
The 2026 World Cup will also be the first hosted jointly by three countries.
Canada, meanwhile, did not even make it that far, finishing third behind Mexico and Honduras in the fourth round.
The 2026 installment will see the World Cup expand from 32 to 46 teams with the bloated format seeing a total of 80 games take place.
"We're not missing our own home World Cup".
The absence of Italy, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland and Chile, who were backed by 13,000 fans during last year's Confederations Cup, has raised the prospect of some games at the World Cup being played to smaller crowds than originally anticipated.
"We cast our vote for the "United" bid as we believe the independent technical assessment made its advantages very clear". The organization is set to earn more than $6 billion in the four-year cycle tied to this year's World Cup, with an estimated profit exceeding $100 million.
