CANADA has opposed US President Donald Trump's suggestion to reinstate Russian Federation in the Group of Seven (G7), four years after it was expelled from the group over the Crimea issue, the Xinhua news agency reported.
While G7 leaders confronted Trump with a slew of data on imports and exports in a bid to sway his thinking, Trump countered his own numbers and held his position that the United States was at a disadvantage on worldwide trade, an official who followed the talks said.
"For today, I think it's much more important to convince our American partners to strengthen our format as guarantor of world order, than to look for something new, more challenging, more hard", EU President Donald Tusk said Friday.
The German chancellor uploaded a photograph on Instagram of her and French President Emmanuel Macron seeming to stare down President Trump. The tit-for-tat risks a full blown trade war, something economists have said would be bad for all involved. "We have little tests every once in a while when it comes to trade".
Macron was reacting to news that the Commander-in-Chief planned to leave the worldwide summit in Quebec earlier than anticipated; skipping out on the group's discussions on climate change and the global environment. On Friday, bilateral meetings preceded roundtable discussions.
By the time he sat face-to-face with Macron, though, Trump was publicly heralding "progress" on the very issues he'd been grousing about.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday warned both Trump and the European Union of the dangers of entering a tit-for-tat trade war over tariffs, urging both sides to instead focus on China's excess steel production. "We will stand by them and anyone who would depart from them, once their back was turned, shows their incoherence and inconsistency", the statement said, according to Politico EU, which quoted a French publication.
His attacks have been widely criticized, as his desired trade punishments would both fracture America's relationship with its closest allies and hurt Americans economically.
"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with USA (guess they were bragging and got caught!)".
Trump is set to meet Trudeau later in the day. Instead of fighting big battles with Trump, his counterparts were angling for a baseline of agreement that might be as low as an acknowledgment of the important role of the G-7.
Moscow was expelled from the rich nations club, which sees itself as a guarantor of rules-based order and the global economy, over its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region.
