Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan (Bal-a-krish-nan) says Kim went to the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore on Monday night. Kim arrived on an Air China jet, NPR's Elise Hu reports.

According to the tracking website Flightrader24, Kim's plane took off from Pyongyang in the morning and was headed for Beijing when it changed its flight number and route, heading south to Singapore.

Kim is not believed to have left his hotel since a meeting with Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, soon after his arrival on Sunday in the city-state.

He thanked Singapore's organisation of the summit as if it was "their own family affair".

Security is tight ahead of the summit between two unpredictable men who in the past have threatened to destroy the other's country during the stand-off over North Korea's nukes.

Mr Kim said to Mr Lee: "The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and the United States, and thanks to your honest efforts. we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit, and I would like to thank you for that".

US President Donald Trump plans to depart early from his unprecedented summit with Kim Jong Un, the White House said Monday, declaring that nuclear talks with North Korea have moved "more quickly than expected".

But it is Kim's pursuit of nuclear weapons that gives his meeting with Mr. Trump such high stakes.

The Trump-Kim summit, which will be held at the Capella Hotel on Tuesday morning, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting USA president.

In return, Kim, said to be in his mid-thirties, called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

Many questions remain unanswered, however, including whether the North Koreans have robust enough communication systems to make sure no one panics and launches an attack, said Vipin Narang, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Security Studies Program.

Officers combed the city on Sunday, from the old colonial section to the modern skyscrapers to the hotel on nearby Sentosa island where Trump and Kim will actually meet.

"I feel that Kim Jong-Un wants to do something great for his people".

Larry Kudlow, Trump's economic adviser, said Sunday on CNN that Trudeau's criticism had damaged Trump's prestige before the summit - and that's why Trump reacted so strongly.

At the G7 summit in Canada and in the hours afterward, Trump railed against trade practices that he described as unfair and said he'd given US representatives instructions to rescind an agreement to official communique that outlined a mutual plan to ensure "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade". "I think things could work out very nicely. I look forward to meeting him and have a feeling that this one-time opportunity will not be wasted". Chairman Kim yesterday held a meeting with Prime Minister Lee.

"When the (US and North Korea) asked us to host the meeting, we could not say no".
