President Donald Trump talks with Kim Yong Chol, former North Korean military intelligence chief and one of leader Kim Jong Un's closest aides, as they walk from their meeting in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, June 1, 2018. The article also stresses the need for confidentiality - meaning Trump will have to resist tweeting the minutes of the meeting. As I recently wrote, while certain sanctions on North Korea are discretionary, a key 2016 law specifically obligates the president to sanction people and entities complicit in human rights abuses in North Korea - not just those involved in weapons proliferation - and the Trump administration legally can't suspend sanctions more broadly unless North Korea implements key human rights reforms.
In the lead up to the summit, North Korea rejected any unilateral nuclear disarmament, and KCNA's reference to denuclearisation of the peninsula has historically meant that Pyongyang wants the United States to remove its "nuclear umbrella" protecting South Korea and Japan.
"We could absolutely sign an agreement" to end the Korean War, Trump said at a White House news conference last week. "I also think I'll know whether or not it will happen fast".
For decades, North Korea has been a pariah state, and now its latest hereditary leader is being treated as a world statesman.

How Vettel and Ferrari turned 'disaster' into triumph - F1
He said the win was special because it came 40 years after Canadian Gilles Villeneuve had won his first race for Ferrari. Vettel said he was "not too bothered" about retaking a lead he last held after the Chinese Grand Prix back in April.
He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.
Trump, who is offering to reduce economic sanctions on North Korea in exchange for denuclearisation, also seemed to warn Kim that the summit is a "one-time opportunity" that should not be wasted.
After a pre-summit meeting of G-7 finance ministers, in which Washington was rebuked by the other six members on June 2, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that despite sharp disagreements on trade, the other countries remain "our most important allies".
While en route to Singapore, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Kim on what he anticipated would be an exciting day.

The summit represents a major gamble for each leader, a high-wire act that carries the elevated potential for risk and reward that Trump has become increasingly comfortable with. Trump and Kim lookalikes held a summit of their own at a local shopping mall, while one bistro is offering a libation known as the Trump-Kim "Bromance:" Beer, tequila, diet Coke and the Korean distilled rice liquor known as soju.
The Economist and CNN do not predict a favourable result for the Trump-Kim summit either. Forging a peace treaty involving South Korea may be another topic of the Trump-Kim meeting.
