Kate Spade's husband Andy said Wednesday that the fashion designer was being treated for depression and anxiety in the years leading up to her death by apparent suicide this week. Designer Kate Spade, one of the biggest names in American fashion known especially for her sleek handbags, was found dead on 5 June 2018 in her NY apartment.

The designer reportedly died by suicide.

After her death on Tuesday, reports pegged to unnamed police officials circulated that said she had left a suicide note for her daughter. Her sister described attempts to place Spade in inpatient care, but said she refused, fearing she would harm her brand's "happy-go-lucky" image. She was honored twice by the Council of Fashion Designers of America throughout a career marked by cheerful colors and peppy patterns.

Coach, now known as Tapestry, bought the Kate Spade brand a year ago for $2.4 billion.

"After she sold the company, she made so much money, Kate could retreat. We once again ask that the family's privacy be respected during this challenging time".

Spade was born on Christmas Eve of 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Kate met her future husband and business partner Andy at a department store where she worked in 1983.

After getting her start at Mademoiselle magazine, Spade turned her attention to her own creations.

The Huffington Post asked, "I Wonder Who Wrote That Melania Trump Tweet", suggesting that Trump himself may have written it. A tweet from Melania Trump's account included pictures of her sitting in the front row at the Gold Star families event.

Together, Andy and Kate founded the Kate Spade brand, which rose to prominence in the '90s with its vibrant line of handbags.

The group opened their first storefront in 1996.

Coach, now known as Tapestry, bought the Kate Spade brand a year ago for $2.4 billion, seeking to broaden its appeal.

She walked away from the company in 2007, a year after it was acquired from the Neiman Marcus Group for $125 million (then known as Liz Claiborne Inc.). Like Kate Spade, its name held special significance.

The couple had one child, Frances Beatrix Spade. She is officially Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan Spade.

"For people who think they know, you'll never know", she said through tears. "We ate many meals together as a family and continued to vacation together as a family".
