‘No longer a pageant’: Miss America scrapping swimsuit competition to focus on talent, achievements

NEW YORK, June 6 ― The Miss America pageant is dropping the swimsuit and evening gown competition and will no longer judge contestants on their physical appearance, organisers announced yesterday.

Former FOX News host and 1989 Miss America Gretchen Carlson, who is now the organization's chairwoman, discussed the decision on Good Morning America.

The competition's contestants - representatives of all 50 US states - "will be asked to demonstrate their passion, intelligence and overall understanding of the job of Miss America", the show reported. "That's huge. And that means that we will no longer have a swimsuit competition".

The evening gown portion is also being revamped the organization says women can wear what they want, DeAngelis reported.

Miss America will be scrapping the swimsuits portion of the event and will be more inclusive to women of all sizes, the contest announced Tuesday.

Carlson said: 'It's what comes out of their mouths that we care about'.

Miss America-the first modern beauty pageant-will no longer be about, ahem, beauty. "It taught me a lifelong discipline beyond the Miss America stage". Others have argued that the swimsuit portion is an important part of the competition.

And lakersnation believe those four options to be the Cavaliers, Houston Rockets , Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers . Smith said he "might have" told LeBron James that he thought the Cavaliers were winning when he made the costly mistake.

". Which was that I was systematically ostracized from Miss America and harassed to be quite honest", Hagan explained.

Miss America's 2019 competition will take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on 9 September. "Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement".

"Guess what? You don't have to anymore", Carlson said Tuesday on the television program Good Morning America.

Miss Rome Executive Director Andrea Pitts said she believes the competition wants to do a better job of showcasing talent and providing a platform for the young women to talk about their areas of social activism.

Accordingly, when the pageant is held this September, almost a year into the #MeToo era, it will no longer have a swimsuit competition. Instead, contestants will wear an outfit in keeping with their own personal style, and there will be additional live interaction time with the judges.

"I'm a strong believer in the interview", Waring says.

Carlson said that both the swimsuit and evening gown portions of the almost century-old competition would be scrapped. That's apt, considering that Miss America's origins rest with an "Inter-City Beauty Contest" started in the early 1920s, with the prize going to "The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America". Maybe other women felt that gut-level unfairness too - even women who took part in the competition themselves when they were younger. But, the swimsuit competition is actually tied to fitness.
