Polls close at 8 p.m. and within minutes, results from mail-in ballots will be made public.
Senator Roger Wicker expected a tough primary challenge from Chris McDaniel, a conservative firebrand who nearly unseated Senator Thad Cochran in 2014.

The high-profile contest with the least drama in this California primary election is the race for U.S. Senate.
More than 92,000 votes were cast as the race narrows to succeed Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, who can not run for a consecutive third term. There were 617,701 Democrats, 492,861 Republicans, 498,989 non-partisan voters and 84,223 with other party registrations.
