The recently rebooted XFL made what was seen as a pretty big stride toward respectability Tuesday, announcing that Oliver Luck would become the league's first commissioner and CEO. The new XFL is scheduled to begin in 2020.
Luck served as the president of NFL Europe and spent four years as athletic director at West Virginia. Luck played in the National Football League for the Houston Oilers and was teammates with Archie Manning. "All of those combined led me to believe the key ingredients to a successful launch are there to deliver great football, which I think was one of the failings of the original league".
Luck has considerable sports-executive experience, in other words, and his hiring shows that XFL founder Vince McMahon is taking things a little more seriously this time around.
Oliver Luck will toe the XFL line as its new commissioner.

He ran a good race and I'd not like to take it away from the victor in any way. "I was jumping up and down in the final furlong. He put up a great performance in the Guineas and it was always going to be the best trial I thought.
"Football has always been a constant in my life and I'm excited about the unique opportunity to present America's favorite sport to fans in a new way", Luck said via press release. He graduated from University of Texas law school in 1987.
The XFL will embrace the latest on and off-field technology, providing live game coverage, content and real-time engagement across multiple platforms, giving fans greater access than ever before. As executive vice president of Regulatory Affairs and Strategic Partnerships, he helped the organization investigate possible NCAA infractions.
Oliver Luck is leaving the NCAA.
The XFL is set to start slated to launch its first 10-week regular season in January of 2020. He was later president and general manager of the Houston Dynamo, leading the franchise to two MLS Cup titles.
