North Carolina leaders say they're poised to make the state even more attractive to big businesses that want to locate here.
Apple has quietly explored the idea of opening a campus for 20,000 employees in northern Virginia, further advancing the possibility that the Washington area could evolve into an East Coast outpost for Silicon Valley.
Apple's move into North Carolina is expected to consist of two stages: a 1,000-employee leased site off Weston Parkway in Cary, followed by a move to a 300-acre site in Research Triangle Park in Wake County.
He was in town to deliver the Commencement speech at his alma mater, Duke University. "We do not share information about economic development projects before they are final, but I will be happy to share more information if or when a decision is made", spokesman Jamal Little said in an email.
The tech giant said in its January release that the location of the new facility will be announced later in the year. "We're not doing a beauty-contest kind of thing", CEO Tim Cook recently told Recode's Kara Swisher.

Although they said they could not talk about negotiations with Apple, the announcement comes amid rising interest in what incentives might be needed for RTP to land the company's major project. Apple expects to hire 20,000 employees over the next five years in those three locations. The new campus will hold call center workers at first. Cook was throwing shots at Amazon's request for city proposals for its second campus.
Apple wasn't immediately available to comment on its plans, nor was Cooper's office.
There are also some connections to the company that could help Northern Virginia's chances.

The incentive package, according to WRAL, could include provisions that grant Apple as much as 90% of withholding taxes from the campus in exchange for 3,000 to 10,000 jobs and 30 years of property tax abatements. Where Amazon has been overt with its plans, leading to many public subsidy offers from states, and some protests from local residents, Apple is being far more secretive and has only promised to announce new plans for its future investment in US facilities later this year.
